Intrepid Science Detectives take on the 3M Challenge!

In January, Mr Taylor and Miss Loj took four young scientists from Year 10 to Loughborough University to participate in 3M’s Science Detectives Challenge.

The investigation centred on a car that crashed on campus under suspicious circumstances!  After donning their CSI-style space suits, our science sleuths had to dust the crime scene for fingerprints and scour the car for as many clues as they could find.  Illicit drugs found by the students were then analysed using techniques including HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography).  The students also tested food deposits recovered from the suspects for the presence of pathogenic bacteria.

The intrepid team are now back at base in Miss Loj’s lab, processing their findings in an attempt to solve the crime.  They will then prepare a written report and a presentation, which will be submitted at the second stage of the challenge in May.
