KS4 Options Form And Letter To Parents

Dear parents,

Over the past months, I have worked with Mrs Patrick and the Heads of School at Newbridge and Castle Rock High Schools to review curriculum provision.

Firstly, in preparation for September 2018 academic year, we restructured the Year 9 Options offer so that students thought more carefully about subjects that they wish to continue into Year 10. Secondly, we have considered the suggestions and questions we received from parents and students throughout the year, alongside the needs, interests and aspirations of students and made the following changes which we know will offer greater choice. The option form overleaf will show you in advance of your child’s options evening on Tuesday 4th December 2018, the choices available to them.

Along with the Core subjects of English Maths and Science, we will continue to promote the facilitating subjects of French, History, Geography, Computer Science and Triple Science, but students need only pick one of those five. Students will also be able to choose these subjects from the open choice table. In doing this, we will be able to offer 3 free option choices to students.

We do still recommend that students carefully consider their career aspirations at the end of A Levels in Year 13 or GCSE in Year 11. Students wishing to progress to university or a higher level apprenticeships are advised to choose more than one facilitating subject at GCSE as these are considered to be amongst the most rigorous and demanding academic subjects and therefore an indicator of a student’s capacity to undertake study at Level 3. Equally, it is also important that students are encouraged to study subjects that they are passionate about and that they excel in. Many students chose to study creative subjects in art, textiles, graphic design and/ or performance based subjects such as Dance, Drama, Music or PE alongside facilitating subjects. The important thing is to get the balance right and every child is an individual with their personal strengths, needs and interests. Taster sessions in subjects that are not currently taught at Key Stage 3 will also be available prior to students making choices. Please be assured that advice is on hand throughout the process from staff across all schools.

Parents and students are welcome to visit and tour the college on a normal working day. The following days are available to book via Ms Clare Gage from Monday 1st October 2018.

Wednesday 3rd October

9.30- 11.00am

Friday 5th October

9.30- 11.00am

Tuesday 9th October

11.15 – 12.15 am

Wednesday 10th October

1.45pm – 2.45 pm

One student from Castle Rock noted to Ms Byrne on Open Evening that ‘Although I am taking my lessons in French in the King Edward site, I feel I have only seen 10% of the entire college. Now that I have, I really think I want to come here.’ As a result of this, we will also organise for Year 9 students from both high schools to tour around the college and visit lessons. Sixth Form students will assist in conducting these tours so that Year 9 students feel comfortable in sharing their questions peer to peer.

Finally, and wholeheartedly, can we thank all parents and students for your ongoing support in our shared journey in learning together to be better than yesterday,

Kind regards,

Jenny Byrne                                                          Julia Patrick
