The 14 - 19 Curriculum at King Edward VII Science and Sport College: Key Stage 4

In recent years, there has been much talk nationally about the need to plan a 14 - 19 curriculum, which is fully inclusive, gives all young people an opportunity to follow courses that meet their individual needs and enables them to gain worthwhile qualifications to assist their transition to adult life.

King Edward has been very pro-active in responding to these challenges and has created strong local collaborative learning partnerships with the local College of Further Education, higher education institutions and employers. It is clear that the College has made very impressive progress in implementing a 14 - 19 curriculum, which not only provides a core entitlement for all, providing essential breadth, but one that also provides choice for students across the age and ability range.

At Key Stage 4, the majority of students have the opportunity to attain a combination of traditional GCSEs and choose from a variety of vocational courses such as BTEC First Certificates or Diplomas, one of the newly introduced Diploma courses and Functional Skills in English, Mathematics and ICT. What is also very significant is the development of provision for foundation learners at level 1 of the National Qualifications Framework, which also provide genuine progression opportunities into post 16 education and training.
