    A Level Sociology

    Entry requirements:

    5 A*-C grades at GCSE, including a grade C in a social studies subject.

    Course content:

    In year 1 we look at how we become the people we are; what happens within our families, and how the education system shapes our attitudes and behaviours. All of this is then linked back to how we operate as a society, and how this changes over time.

    In year 2 we look at the different ’layers’ of society, and whether all members of society have the same chances in life. This involves studies of gender, ethnicity and class in particular. We also look at patterns of poverty around the world, and explanations of those patterns. We also study patterns of crime in the UK, and a range of explanations for them. This is done through a range of different teaching styles, but involves a great deal of debate and the development of thinking skills, analytical skills, and close attention to current affairs. You will learn to research independently and how to apply your knowledge to a range of situations you might not previously considered. Sociology will open your eyes to the world around you, and help you to see it in a different light.

    How your work is assessed:

    Three exams at the end of year 13 for the A2 qualification or two exams at the end of year 12 for the AS qualification.

    Progression to further education, higher education, apprenticeship and employment

    Sociology is highly regarded by most universities, partly because of the range of skills it develops. Sociology requires enquiry skills, an ability to form a reasoned debate and the ability to ‘read’ and understand a wide range of data and to be able to see things from a range of perspectives. It is also highly valued by employers because it develops an understanding of the way people think and behave, which is useful in virtually every job/training role there is.

    Extra curricular opportunities

    Students will take part in a range of different kinds of research activity, both in and out of school. There are also close links with our partner school in Rwanda.

    Students can train to be an academic mentor and support GCSE sociology students.
