The Sixth Form at King Edward VII Science and Sport College

It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to our Sixth Form information area.

Our Sixth Form is large, diverse and successful. We offer a breadth of curricular and extra-curricular activities in order to reach students’ individual needs. Our Sixth Form provision is extensive therefore allowing students to grow academically, socially and emotionally.

We pride ourselves on the high level of Sixth Form teaching. Many subjects achieve results well above national averages and the sixth form was rated as ‘good’ in our April 2015 inspection.

We have a committed and experienced Sixth Form team that support students’ journey in making optimum progress and ensuring all have a destination that is either university, further education or an advanced apprenticeship. Students receive individualised support in order that their desired destination is secured. We also have a dedicated Sixth Form Officer who is always on hand to offer advice and support.

Continuing a trend, we have a record number of students who have applied to university; including Oxford and Cambridge universities. Students are actively encouraged to be involved in university access programmes. This year, potential medics, lawyers and scientists have attended workshops at Leicester University, Nottingham University and De Montfort University. All students are given the opportunity to attend careers fairs and taster lectures in the summer term too.

Students are also given the option to study the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This is highly regarded by the Russell Group Universities as students develop their research and independent study skills on a topic of their choice.

Our enrichment programme makes up part of our students’ personalised programme of study. A range of activities are available from academic mentoring of GCSE students, supporting in local primary schools  to sports leadership opportunities. We have seen the establishment of many academic clubs including the Debating Society, Medics group, Science Group and the Think Tank, a current affairs discussion group. Many students have taken up the opportunity to study Mandarin Chinese as an enrichment activity too.

This year we have been developing Sixth Form leadership opportunities. Our Head Boys and Girls and Senior Prefects were appointed in June and are working hard to develop the Student Council which includes the Charity, Events, Sport, Enrichment and Wellbeing committees.

We have just opened our brand new Sixth Form study centre with state of the art ICT equipment  and plenty of room for quiet work.

We feel passionately that our Sixth Form experience should offer more than the opportunity to study at Advanced Level. Our Sixth Form students jointly agreed on the following ‘Post 16 Purpose’ that reflects this view….

“All members of King Edward VII Sixth form will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to flourish in higher education or employment.

They will develop academically, socially and emotionally, enabling them to strive for continuous personal improvement and growth”
