Partnership Volunteering Structure

Key Stage 1 & 2

Play coach

The Play Coach initiative is delivered by NWLSSP staff and is designed to give primary school children the opportunity to become sports leaders. Targeted at years 5/6 pupils the initiative is based around the idea that these pupils can help with the delivery of KS 1 & 2 extra curricular sport and physical activity within their school. Leadership skills and ethics are taught with the ambition that the year 5/6 pupils can assist with setup and leading of fun, physical activities at lunch and break time alongside e.g. lunchtime supervisors. Leaders are taught basic but effective games as well as getting a chance to design their own games. This initiative has had a huge impact on positive behaviour at lunchtimes

Key Stage 3

Key stage 3 pupils are a very important component in the sports leadership structure. This is where most pupils get their first in depth look at leading sports. These students are offered the opportunity to assist with the delivery of primary school Level 2 School Games competitions and level 3 School Games (county standard). A level 1 Sports Leaders UK qualification is offered to each of the high schools to train young leaders in the skills that very will need and valuable experience. Young leaders do not need to do the course to help at events.

Specific sports/officiating training sessions are also offered to KS3 to help at individual events.

Key Stage 4 & 5

Key stage 4 & 5 pupils help with a wide spectrum of competitions and events within the partnership. As the secondary schools host a range of festivals and competitions their young leaders are always keen to help. These students are offered a wide variety of volunteering opportunities across all level 2 and 3 School Games. The NWLSSP also offers the secondary young leaders at King Edward VII and Ashby Secondary the Sports Leaders UK Level 2 qualification. This qualification is more advanced that the level 1 and requires more practical experience.

Specific sports/officiating training sessions are also offered to KS3 to help at individual events. Where possible accredited NGB courses are offered to students through NWLSSP.
